چکیده

Tree spanner problems have important applications in network design, e.g. in the telecommunications industry. Mathematically, there have been considered quite a number of maxstretch tree spanner problems and of average stretch tree spanner problems. We propose a unified notation for 20 tree spanner problems, which we investigate for graphs with general positive weights, with metric weights, and with unit weights. This covers several prominent problems of combinatorial optimization. Having this notation at hand, we can clearly identify which problems coincide. In the case of unweighted graphs, the formally 20 problems collapse to only five different problems. Moreover, our systematic notation for tree spanner problems enables us to identify a tree spanner problem whose complexity status has not been solved so far. We are able to provide an NP-hardness proof. Furthermore, due to our new notation of tree spanner problems, we are able to detect that an inapproximability result that is due to Galbiati (2001, 2003) in fact applies to the classical max-stretch tree spanner problem. We conclude that the inapproximability factor for this problem thus is 2 − ε, instead of only 1+ √ 5 2 ≈ 1.618 according to Peleg and Reshef (1999).

Tree Spanners for Subgraphs and Related Tree Covering Problems

For any fixed parameter k ≥ 1, a tree k–spanner of a graph G is a spanning tree T in G such that the distance between every pair of vertices in T is at most k times their distance in G. In this paper, we generalize on this very restrictive concept, and introduce Steiner tree k–spanners: We are given an input graph consisting of terminals and Steiner vertices, and we are now looking for a tree k...

Tree Spanners on Chordal Graphs: Complexity, Algorithms, Open Problems

A tree t-spanner T in a graph G is a spanning tree of G such that the distance in T between every pair of vertices is at most t times their distance in G. The Tree t-Spanner problem asks whether a graph admits a tree t-spanner, given t. We substantially strengthen the hardness result of Cai and Corneil [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 8 (1995) 359– 387] by showing that, for any t ≥ 4, Tree t-Spanner is ...

A tree t-spanner of a graph G is a spanning subtree T of G in which the distance between every pair of vertices is at most t times their distance in G. Spanner problems have received some attention, mostly in the context of communication networks. It is known that for general unweighted graphs, the problem of deciding the existence of a tree t-spanner can be solved in polynomial time for t = 2,...

Tree Spanners for Bipartite Graphs and Probe Interval Graphs1

A tree t-spanner T in a graph G is a spanning tree of G such that the distance between every pair of vertices in T is at most t times their distance in G. The tree t-spanner problem asks whether a graph admits a tree t-spanner, given t . We first substantially strengthen the known results for bipartite graphs. We prove that the tree t-spanner problem is NP-complete even for chordal bipartite gr...
